·            Two glasses
·             Blue  colorant
·             A piece of cardboard

1. Fill up two glasses , one with cold water and one with hot water.

        B) Make a small report with the results of your observations

Here is a sample of the results of this experience

CONSTRUCTION OF A THERMOMETER

OBJECTIVES:

• Check the phenomena of expansion and contraction of materials.
• Construct a thermometer by applying  them.

MATERIAL:
• Plastic bottles  of  different sizes.
• Water.
• A  Drinking straw.
• Colourant.
• play dough

PROCESS:
A.   Water Thermometer
1. Pour some water in the small bottle . When i is half full, add a few drops of colourant  and continue filling it with water to the edge.
2. With the play dough  model a tape of 1.5 cm  width and wrap around the straw as follows:

3. Place the straw inside the bottle and use the play dough  to seal it. It is important not to squash  the straw so as not to block the water flow.
At the same make sure there is no air in the bottle, so do not leave any  slits.

WE HAVE ALREADY MANUFACTURED OUR THERMOMETER!

Now let's check how it works

4. Place the thermometer inside a large bottle as shown in the drawing,

Add hot water and watch what happens. If we have done well, the liquid should go up
5. Now remove the thermometer from the bottle  with hot water and place it in
cold water

QUESTIONS:

1.            Why does the water raise by the straw on the water thermometer?
2.            What is your opinion about the fact that the majority of thermometers are made of alcohol and not water?

Among all the animals in the kingdom of life, could you guess which are our students Xavi, Tiago and Marcos referring to?
